What is a Compound Miter Saw?

The most common type of miter saw is called a standard miter saw. It has a fixed vertical pivot that in turn allows the blade to be moved to specified degrees on the horizontal plane. A compound miter saw allows the saw blade to cut at different angles on both the vertical and horizontal planes. In addition to cutting traditional miter cuts at specified horizontal degrees, the compound miter saw also lets the carpenter the ability to choose an angle to which the blade can be tilted, providing the ability to make compound miter cuts, which is generally how crown molding is cut.

Benefits of a Compound Miter Saw

If you regularly cut and install crown molding, or are going to tackle a new crown molding project around your house, the compound miter saw is the correct tool for the job. Not only will it give you the precision crosscuts you need at specified degrees, it also allows the head and blade to pivot on the vertical plane, giving you the ability to make both horizontal and vertical cuts without requiring the wood to be adjusted on the saw.

How to Choose a Single or Dual Miter Saw

Knowing how you will use your miter saw will inform your buying decision between and single and dual saw. A single action compound miter saw tilts on the vertical plane, but only in one direction. This means if you need to make a cut in the opposite direction you will need to flip the piece of wood on the saw bed.

Conversely, a dual action compound miter saw allows the saw head and blade to pivot in both directions on the vertical plane, giving the carpenter the ability to make saw blade adjustments without moving the wood, which may be already precisely placed on the saw bed.

How to Cut Crown Molding with a Compound Miter Saw

Since crown molding is designed to be placed flush against the wall at one angle and the ceiling at another, it’s very easy to ruin an expensive piece of wood. To properly cut crown molding so it fits precisely on both angles, follow these directions:

  • Orient the crown molding so the ceiling angle is up and the wall angle is down.
  • Now, flip the wood upside down so the angles are revered.
  • On your compound miter saw place the top (the part that will meet the wall) flush against the gate and the bottom (the part the will meet the ceiling) flush on the saw bed.
  • Make the cut on your desired angle (generally 45-degrees).
  • When you flip the wood back over it will precisely meet both floor and ceiling on the correct angle.
